Current Information:Born-Stoke Newington Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium
From 9th-13th February, 1915, the 1st Dorset battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division were in trenches at Wulverghem, south of the Wulverghem-Messines road. The battalion diary recorded that 12th February was a ‘quiet day’, despite two men being killed, one of them being Henry Christmas, and another four wounded. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
